A righteous man by lily-fox A righteous man by lily-fox
Edit: Updated this. I wasn't digging the grey-blue wings, and I messed with the whole thing a little bit. Better, I think.

A fellow Castiel fan asked for "badass" Castiel, and I mulled over it for a while. Oh, he can be BA, no question. Sometimes just the tone of his voice makes a dude want to quake in his shoes. But when I think about Castiel, I mostly see his slump-shouldered posture in that big old trenchcoat, head cocked in confusion. It's sweet, but it's not badass, and I was having trouble with ideas.

But if you've been following me for a while, you know I've done a handful of Legion fanart, and I thought, hey shit, I sure would love to see Castiel decked out in Gabriel's armor. I tweaked it some to suit him, and I really dig it. You need a nice outfit to go to battle, right?

I realize I made him left-handed, but why not. And I had only the vaguest reference for wings, so forgive me if they're super anatomically off. I mean, we're talkin' about angels, here, so.

I think this armour looks way better than the costumes in Legion. I'm doing a bit of research into them because I want to make an angel costume at some point (after Kili!). The Legion costumes have some interesting elements but overall they were almost savage costumes. They remind me more of bronze age warriors rather than God's greatest weapons.
Castiel looks like a heavenly knight here, I'm almost tempted to cosplay as this exactly. But knowing me I'll always add something along the way. I'm considering working Enochian symbols into the armour and I quite like the cape thing Michael wore in the film, except burgundy or plum velvet rather than flat black fabric.
Anyway, know that you have inspired me!

Oh my goodness. This -is- what I thought it was! I cannot express my glee at this! I have been thinking a lot about Legion while catching up on Supernatural lately... The whole brotherly love and angels aspect. Michael and Lucifer break my heart almost as much as Michael and Gabriel in Legion.

Castiel is such the darling though. I agree it's difficult to picture him in a badass position, even though some glimpses of that attitude definitely streak through now and then. Quite honestly I think he can be scary when he's all business no smiles. I'd quake in my boots like a plate of jello on the washer if we ever got to see him in battle gear. While I love the mystery and ambivalence towards his true angelic form, all the talk about his soldier days leaves me wiggling with curiousness.

I think, even accidentally, making him left handed is very appropriate. Left hand is associated with destruction and well he did his share of shaking up the heavenly order among other things. I didn't catch the grey-blue wings, but I love the golden lightening towards the top of these wings. The coloring and lighting in this picture delights me endlessly. Also, I am sorry I haven't spoken up before on your other works! I love all of your art. It always makes me happy to see. I just couldn't contain myself when I saw such a lovely cross over. I adore every piece you create, whether it's fanart or some sweet n' lush original art.

I know it's been far too long since I've checked on your work if you have 4 new pictures of Castiel when I never even knew you gave a shit about Supernatural. Honestly, I've been waiting for you to take an interest in the character. I knew you'd like him. He's just your type. haha This Legion armor fits him perfectly. I can imagine him showing up to see Sam and Dean one day wearing this and them being very confused. haha
Miss you,

I think there was an episode at one point where Baby was turned into a real girl. I never saw it though! On another note (a related note?) I've been aching to draw Sam and Dean as females. They would make some smoakin' hot babes.
My Dean has literally been waiting to be driven by me my entire life -- he was left to me by my great grandmother! Dad and I are restoring him now. I can't wait to feel him roar to life again when he's finished. I will be sure to send you pictures of him if you're interested, lady. :)

Shit yes, I'm interested! You are so lucky. The Lemans is really sporty and sexy. The Impala, she's great -- and maybe it's the scent of death that I associate with seeing that car -- but she's so big and foreboding, chrome like handles on a casket... She makes me think of a hearse. Which is kind of cool.

Gawd, I would LOVE to see your genderbent Sam and Dean! I've seen some pretty great ones, and you can never have too many, really. Ha, somebody likened Dean's sad/alarmed face to Disney's Rapunzel, and it's right on. Big green eyes, freckles, kissy lips. How much he'd appreciate the comparison, I don't know.

Awesome! Oooh, the colors are just fantastic! I love that look on his face, that definitely captured the badass in him. I'd love to actually see his character in some armor, which isn't too far fetched since, when we see angels in actual heaven, they're still looking like their hosts.

Wait, what? We see angels in Heaven, but they look like their people? What kinda sense does that make! I assumed they'd be all huge and bizarre in their trueforms. Or is that like, in movies when they have people in other countries speaking English just for the ease of the audience, or something? Which is LAME. I mean, any reason to look at Misha Collins is fine with me, but that seems like sissying out of a cool opportunity.

Glad you like this, though! Ha, I wouldn't want to piss him off. Or maybe I would, as long as I knew I wouldn't end up in smoking pile of ash.

Yeah, it's kinda weird, but hey, it's not a super high-budget show, so y'know. I think they might only show their true forms in battle. Which I'd nonetheless love to see.

In the series, they only look like their host because that's what the character's are use to seeing. They still have the crazy true forms, but Dean and Sam can't see them.

This is Indy. Greetings from Canada!!! I hope this finds you and yours well.

For openers, one beautiful piece here!! Excuse me for splitting hairs here, but I've always been told that when one heard Gabriel's horn at the end of life, it was time to meet your Maker. St. Michael is the warrior archangel, ergo; the armour or is Supernatural playing around with Christian mythology again?

These are just the thoughts of one confused Canadian!!!

Sincerely yours always,

Indy.

To be honest, I don't know a thing about what the Bible says about the various angels, except what I've learned from, you know, things you hear people say. In the show Supernatural, Castiel is at one point warring in Heaven with Raphael, so I thought hey, why not give him some nice armor. C:

What I told you didn't come from the Bible, per se. I got it from the Internet and from what I was taught in Sunday School. That's exactly right. I also heard from people who supposed to know something about these things.

Is Raphael also an archangel? Castiel is beginning to intrigue me, and is he supposed to be an archangel? Methinks it's time for Dean to teach him about the human race.

You put a lot of great detail into that armour. It was also a nice touch with the dark blue wings. Silver and a dark shade of blue always looked great together.

Keep up the good work, kiddo!

Sincerely yours always,

Indy.

Thanks, Indy! I don't think Castiel is an archangel in the show, but he ends up being pretty important (in the story). I think, at least I've heard, that there are only like a handful of archangels, including Michael, Gabriel and Raphael. Maybe there're more, I don't know. It's all pretty silly to think about. :D

Oh, Cas was never promoted, he just went on a really ill-advised little power trip. I think he tried to do good things, but, you know, the road to hell is paved with good intentions... You know, Supernatural is not the smartest show on the air, but it is really fun, and it gets you hooked right away. It's full of wonderful characters you feel for. If you ever wanted to give it a watch, I think you might really dig it. :)

Ha, I don't know about more Sherlock art. The amount of it online is just SO huge, and I can't think of a single original thing to do with it. We'll see. Probably there'll be more when Season 3 comes out.

Dear Lily:

This is Indy. Greetings from Canada!! I hope this finds you and yours well.

I have seen a couple of episodes of Supernatural, and it's got a lot of things I'm curious about--like angels. I have a friend who is now a Roman Catholic priest. Many moons ago, I remember talking to him (I still do when he's visiting his mother here in town), and we got around to the subject of angels. He told me that angels are made out of pure energy. The only reason we see them in human form (wings and halos notwithstanding)is that we humans can only relate to other human beings.

An ill-advised power trip? I've seen Castiel, and he looks too innocent to be on an ill-advised anything. How is his education in Human Race 101 coming? Was it you who said that Cas likes the human race but doesn't know that much about it? Time for some more education, Winchester-style.

Oh, Lily, you got any speculations for Season 3? Do you think John is going slug Sherlock or turn him away? I hear that Benedict is definitely interested in, not only continuing to play our favourite eccentric sleuth but also continuing Sherlock and John's relationship beyond just being friends and flatmates.

Sincerely yours always,

Indy.

Pure energy sounds pretty legit. In Supernatural, angels take [willing] human hosts because most people can't witness their true forms without their eyes burning out. I'd really love to see an angel who took like a schlubby 60-year-old farmer as a host, that would be pretty cute. I guess as far as hosts go, Castiel's is on the schlubbier side, in his rumpled old trenchcoat. Bless. And ha, yeah, Castiel can surprise you! He seems so benign, but if you mess with his friends, you get his bad side, I guess.

Oh man, Season 3... I'm really curious how they're going to handle Sherlock's return, whether they'll stay close to the book. I don't think Watson will pass out, but I wonder if Sherlock will (finally!) get his disguise on? I feel like it'd be really hard to hide such an unusual face, but I'd love to see him try. What about you, what do you think?

I'm not Lily, but I can answer your question.
In the movie Legion, the archangel Micheal forsakes his standing as God's right hand general to take the side of humanity and give mankind a fighting chance against the plague of lesser angels possessing humans. Yes, I know a bit "WTF" but that's what happened in the movie.
Anyway, since Micheal was down with the people, Gabriel stepped up into his brother's place to do God's will, hence he became decked out in armor and all that.
Also, Gabriel might be the messenger, but before Gengis Khan, the term "Don't shoot the messenger" had yet to come around, so a messenger had to know how to defend him or herself.

Hopefully, that helps. :)

Dear Soul:

This is Indy. Greetings from Canada!! I hope this finds you and yours well.

Gabriel took over as God's general. Michael went down to Earth, like Castiel does in Supernatural, and helps man. These lesser angels sound like Satan is up to his old tricks again.

I've never heard of Legion until now. It seems intriguing. You're right. A messenger does have to defend whether he's telling somebody their number is up or that the world is coming to an end.

It's clear as a bell now. I thank you ever so kindly for this.

Indy.

Have you seen Supernatural? If Castiel isn't an archangel (yet), what level of angel is he? Lily told me he does get pretty important, but I really suspect his being promoted to God.

In DeviantArt, I've seen art pieces with Gabriel, Raphael and also an angel named Balthasar. To me, that was one of the name of the Three Wise Men, but I could be all wet.

I haven't seen the series, just a few episodes, but as far as I know, all of the archangels have shown up, along with the personifications of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.
As for Castiel, he's apparently 'just' an angel, there's no real specifications on what level he is, but he's powerful enough that his true form, when viewed by a psychic, burned her eyes own. He warned her about it too...

Dear Soul:

This is Indy. Greeting from Canada!! I hope this finds you and yours well.

I went to the Supernatural Wiki last night, and I found that I've still got a lot of reading to do. Yet, I'm not sure as to whether or not what I read was Biblical canon or it just had to do with the show. I went to a Roman Catholic website about the Archangel Michael, and it said he was the one who, at the point of passing, got the ready to depart soul to clean the slate about the sins it committed in life; thus frustrating Satan. It's curious stuff.

I just told Lily this story, but I'll tell it you now. I've a friend who's a Roman Catholic priest and, many moons ago, we were talking about various things, and we got around to the subject of angels. He told me that angels are pure energy and why they're seen in human form is that it's the only way humans can relate to them. We humans seem to feel more comfortable around other humans--it's only logical, right. Am I safe to say than none of us humans know what pure energy looks like?

Supernatural's take on the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse was interesting, but I don't understand from where they got "Conquest." I was sure the names of the Four Horsemen were Death, War, Famine and Pestilence. Oh, the "Conquest" I got from a Roman Catholic website.

You got any ideas about that?

Sincerely yours always,

Indy.

Conquest and War are slightly different terms for the same thing, one just sounds a little more pretentious. Pestilence has sometimes been substituted with Pollution, but its still the Horseman associated with rot, decay and sickness, just as both War and Conquest are associated with violence, warfare and inhumane treatment upon the battlefield.
Me personally, I believe Death is not only the oldest, but the kindest of the Horsemen, mainly due to the fact that everything dies eventually, so he doesn't really need to fret over his job as much as the other three and allows himself the liberty to give the living second chances in avoiding him.

As for the Biblical connotations of Supernatural, I can't really pin down much due to my general inexperience with the show (I mostly read the Wiki and caught a few clips on youtube, I've seen on episode all the way through) but there is a lot of referencing to the olden days of blood sacrifice and tactics used by the Puritans of Salem in the exorcism of witches and their craft, so I think maybe its a little bit of everything all rolled together. Which kind of makes sense, considering the Word of God has been translated and mistranslated so many times that alternative rites have cropped up over time.
