Keter by lily-fox Keter by lily-fox
I went to see The Hobbit a couple of times and fell totally in love. I really wanted to draw a lady dwarf. And I didn’t want to give her facial hair, which I don’t have a good reason for, I just, I don’t know. I didn’t want to. But I wanted her to be masculine but still beautiful. She looks like she could swing a mean axe.

Her name is Keter (with sisters Oster and Sinder). No complicated color, but I made her a nice new dwarvish halo. I referred to cable knitting patterns for most of the details.

Nice design. I like the storybook-illustration style linework and all the detailing, and also the stippled coloring.

I would not mess with her. I like the design. She's a very handsome woman. The greaves looks great and again i love your small detail... I especially like the cloak hooks and her buckle.

I love it! Despite the fact that the beardedness of the lady dwarves is a favourite detail of mine. :D She does look like she very much belongs in that world! Damn, now I want to make a dwarf lady. I have a secret love of drawing random dwarves. I'd have to make her extra beardy.
Are you going to draw Sinder too? (Great names, btw!)

She's wonderful. I don't think they need have facial hair anyway. I believe Gimli's comments on lady khazdul were tongue-in-cheek banter.

Oooo, I'm liking it. You definitely struck with the masculine but still femme ideal, and I've been aching for women dwarves, since I liken myself to something between a hobbit and dwarf :D Her silhouette is magnificent and I'd love to see her mid-swing.

This is awesome!! I got the art book about the making of the movie and this looks just like the lady dwarves they made! You seem to have come to the same conclusion as them haha, not too much beard on the ladies....that would look interesting ahahah!

she could have had an underbeard. Without the facial hair she looks more like a Dragon Age dwarf, not that it's a bad thing.

I'm not sure what an underbeard would look like. I think she's alright with just some good sideburns. :)

I love the outfit. I've been trying to conjure up lady dwarven clothing styles and hair styles for my own character and the Pathfinder universe that she lives in.

Very lovely!

I could be wrong, but I thought that the whole "lady dwarves with beards" was only mentioned in the movies and not in the books. Does anyone know if this is true or not?

It's in the books, in Appendix A. They pretty much took Gimli's quote in the movie straight from there.

Sure! I know it was an old comment, but since you asked I figured I'd reply. It's interesting how many people think they made that up for the movies - I did too, till I reread the books and happened to stumble across the quote again. XD

It's true, apparently. Bearded dwarf ladies was just a thing they did in the films. But I think it works so well!

Ah, thanks for clarifying! I'm honestly neutral about female dwarves having beards. They either have them or they don't, either way works

Well, if it is any help, bearded female dwarves was not part of Tolkien's legendarium, but made up by Jackson for the movie. :) Love your lady dwarf BTW :)

Funnily enough, in the scenes of The Hobbit where they show the Dwarves before their fall, the women don't have any facial hair. I noticed immediately and was pretty peeved haha! Either way, she would fit in quite well. :)

No, there were definitely some little bearded ladies there, I promise. In the city outside Erebor, right? It was like a marketplace that got torched by Smaug? There were for sure some women rocking little muttonchop 'staches. :D
