A giant tortoise at the Honolulu Zoo. This one was sitting right by the edge of the paddock and candidly appraised us with this penetrating, intimidating expression of judgment. They have disturbing faces up close, ("like a burn victim," my husband said,) but their eyes are remarkably human. I felt like I was unquestionably lower on the totem pole than this guy, like I was meeting a silent old Buddhist monk.

I took a ton of photos that day, but this was my favorite. You can see them all on this Flickr set.

Tortoises are so amazing, and I think you captured the ancient feeling about them very well in this photo. :)

I lived with a very old tortoise for a short while, and you're right. They seem so wise, so past all our mundane scurryings. Incredible photo.

If there is any secret to this life I live, this is it: the sound of what cannot be seen sings within everything that can. & there is nothing more to it than that.

We have a few giant tortoises at the National Zoo.

Their eyes do look oddly human... Which contrasts even more with the dinosaur-like texture of their skin (especially on their legs). It's so weird how you can almost see the years behind those eyes.

Design can be art. Design can be aesthetics. Design is so simple, that's why it is so complicated.

Wow. I love this. Very good photo. I'm really eager to get to the zoo with my camera as well.

Oh, THATS what it is... so cool! :D

Don't judge a piece of art by its sketch.

"Like a burn victim," alright. He's one hat and a sweater shy of another Nightmare on Elm Street sequel.

i have a pet red-foot tortoise and i look at him the same way: with his soulful eyes and monk-like demeanor. boris knows what's going on in the world :)

I love the random tortise shoulder. It threw me off at first. Sounds like a cool moment. It makes me think of Master Ugway from Kung Fu Panda.
